ARTIST STATEMENT: I decided to photograph this building because I like taking pictures of places people don't usually see. This is now abandoned I think and I like that a lot about it. It is old so it ages the building in an interesting way that takes you back in time; but it also has elements of juxtaposition with the old building and the modern signs above the windows. The texture of the building is interesting and also ages it. I tried to make my picture well balanced and composed by using asymmetrical balance in the second picture. In photoshop I increased the contrast and brightness.
"St. Thomas"
"St. Thomas Church"
ARTIST STATEMENT: Although I consider myself not at all religious, I enjoy the architecture of many old churches. I like how it is made of stone because it shows the amount of time and effort it took to make this building. It isn't hard to take a pretty picture of buildings like these because the architect and construction workers did a lot of work to make it beautiful to begin with. However, I used the rule of thirds and balance to try and make the picture itself as aesthetically pleasing as the actual church. In photoshop I increased the contrast, but made certain places darker and others lighter to increase the contrast between the white sky and building.
"Parking Structure"
"Views"
ARTIST STATEMENT: I personally love to go to the top of parking structures and enjoy the view. I like how photographs from high up focus on the unity of different buildings together, rather than just looking at one building itself. In photoshop I increased the contrast, made the image brighter and made the warm colors more pronounced to show that even on rainy days Ann Arbor is still bright. I like kodachrome pictures a lot and I tried to make these pictures resemble it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeSff63MTLc
"Abandoned"
"Abandoned Jeep"
ARTIST STATEMENT: In my opinion, I think what people leave behind show a lot about human nature. I think that graffiti can be interpreted as art and that abandoned items, such as vehicles, can capture what people have left behind beyond the actual item themselves. It is human nature to always want the biggest and best thing, and for many it is like that today. Old cars get left behind and companies that go out of business put their past behind them and try to shoot for better things. In my photographs I try to capture the beauty of the things that are left behind. In photoshop I increased the contrast to show the variation of colors and I made the image brighter as well.
"Nickel's Arcade"
"Arcade"
ARTIST STATEMENT: I decided to photograph Nickel's Arcade because I think it is remarkably built. When I think of Ann Arbor, this image always comes to mind. The way it is built is astonishing to me because I don't have that level of skill by any means. I like the amount of detail in the images and the lines the top of it creates a lot of depth in the image. I think the lines on the window act as leading lines because my eyes are guided to the middle of the roof windows. In photoshop I increased the contrast and made it darker as well as lighter in other areas.
